Background of the study
The role of women in local government decision-making has gained increasing attention as societies move toward more inclusive governance. In Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, women’s participation in political decision-making processes remains both a challenge and an opportunity for democratic enhancement. Historically marginalized in formal political institutions, women are gradually asserting their influence through community activism, local councils, and grassroots movements (Akinola, 2023). Recent research emphasizes that when women are empowered to participate in decision-making, there is a marked improvement in policy outcomes, particularly in areas of social welfare, education, and healthcare (Balogun, 2024). In Iseyin, cultural, social, and economic factors interact to either constrain or promote women’s political engagement. The study considers how these factors, alongside legislative frameworks and societal attitudes, shape the opportunities available to women. By adopting a mixed-methods approach, this research examines both quantitative data on electoral participation and qualitative narratives from female leaders, thus providing a comprehensive picture of their evolving role in local governance (Olatunji, 2025). The study situates itself within global discourses on gender equality and political participation, offering valuable insights into the transformative potential of women’s involvement in local government.

Statement of the problem
Despite ongoing efforts to promote gender equality, women in Iseyin Local Government Area face persistent barriers to full participation in local government decision-making. Societal stereotypes, traditional norms, and institutional constraints continue to limit women’s influence in policy formulation and governance. This marginalization contributes to underrepresentation in key decision-making positions, thereby affecting the inclusiveness and effectiveness of local governance (Ogunyemi, 2023). The lack of targeted policies and mentorship opportunities further exacerbates these challenges, leading to a political environment where women’s voices are undervalued. This study addresses the gap by exploring the extent of women’s participation and identifying the critical barriers that hinder their involvement, with a view to recommending strategies for enhancing their role in governance (Adebisi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the level of women’s participation in local government decision-making in Iseyin.

  2. To identify the socio-cultural and institutional barriers affecting women’s political engagement.

  3. To recommend strategies to enhance women’s role in local governance.

Research questions:

  1. What is the current level of women’s participation in local government in Iseyin?

  2. What are the primary barriers to effective participation by women?

  3. How can policy interventions enhance women’s influence in decision-making?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Women’s participation in decision-making is significantly lower than that of men.

  2. Socio-cultural norms negatively influence women’s political engagement.

  3. Policy reforms can significantly improve women’s representation.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the critical role of women in local governance and the transformative potential of their increased participation. The findings offer essential insights for policymakers seeking to enhance gender equality and democratic processes at the grassroots level. By addressing structural barriers and proposing actionable recommendations, the research contributes to more inclusive governance and improved policy outcomes. It also enriches academic discourse on gender and politics, providing a reference for future studies in similar socio-political environments (Fadare, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the role of women in local government decision-making within Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, and does not consider other regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Women’s participation: The involvement of women in political decision-making processes.

  • Local governance: Administration and policy-making at the municipal or local level.

  • Empowerment: The process of enabling individuals to participate fully in political and social activities.
